FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

... For the past 25 years we have worked diligently. What we have accomplished is impressive. Men and women who came together with a shared commitment to serve the Community. During this time we wer often faced with the difficult reality of being "the first". The first to perform our duties as Haudenosaunee people within a system that was not designed for us, or by us. We have demonstrated superior leadership qualities in the performance of our duties. It was through our commitment, our dedication and our leadership that we have honorably entrenched our Police Service within the social fabric of our Community.

We Will Continue to Police as our Code of Ethics details:

As a Six Nations Police Officer, my fundamental duties are:

• To serve my community
• To safeguard lives and property;
• To protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder and,
• To respect the Human Rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice.

I will learn from my life experiences. I will maintain calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule. I will develop self-restraint. I will be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. I will be honest in thought and deed in both my personal and professional life. I will obey the laws of the Territory and the Regulations of this Department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.

I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear of favour, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.

My behaviour will reflect the values that are common to all aboriginal people. These values - Kindness, Honesty, Sharing, Strength, Bravery, Wisdom and Humility - make up the wholeness that is the spiritual core surrounded by Respect. As an Ogweho:Weh person, I hold profound Respect for all life. All life is interconnected and interrelated. It is this total vision and spiritual knowledge that is the core of Ohweho:weh understanding and life ways.

I recognize the Badge I wear as a symbol of public fatih and trust and I accept it as a Public Trust to be held so long as I am true to the Ethics of this Police Service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before the Creator, before my Community and before my Family, to my chosen profession of Peace Keeping.
